PICOT Trial: Access treatment for whiplash across Australia

PICOT Trial: Access treatment for whiplash across Australia

About this trial

PICOT (Physiotherapists bIopsyChosocial Online Training) is evaluating an online training program that helps physiotherapists deliver the StressModex approach. StressModex combines psychological strategies with physiotherapy exercises for people with neck or back pain after a road traffic injury.

Earlier research showed that when physiotherapists use this combined approach, people recover better than with exercise alone. In-person training works well but is expensive and difficult to offer across Australia. PICOT is testing whether online training can help more physiotherapists learn and confidently use the StressModex approach so that more people can access this type of care.

Who can take part

You may be able to access a participating physiotherapist if you:

  • Are aged 18 years or older
  • Have neck and/or back pain following a road traffic injury
  • Have had the pain for 14 weeks or less
  • Are at medium or high risk of poor recovery (this is checked with a short questionnaire)

People with certain serious conditions (for example spinal fracture, infection, cancer-related pain, or diagnosed inflammatory arthritis) are not suitable for this approach.

What is involved

You are connected to a physiotherapy clinic with clinicians who have completed StressModex training. The physiotherapist will provide usual clinical care using the StressModex approach. You may be asked to complete several questionnaires about your recovery before your first physiotherapy session and up to 12 months later.

How to take part

You can access a StressModex-trained physiotherapist in two ways:

1. Find a participating clinic near you
